Today (Oct. 15) the Talking Heads craze continues with Jeopardy! dedicating a whole category to them, which they presented.

Last week, Deryck Whibley published a memoir titled Walking Disaster. The day before its publication, the Sum 41 frontman talked with the LA Times about the book’s sexual assault accusations against the band’s former manager Greig Nori. Nori has since denied the allegations, and today Whibley responded to Nori’s statement.

“Well early in the morning/ At the break of day/ I ain’t got no God/ To whom I pray/ No lord above/ To set me free/ I keep my burdens/ Right here with me.” So began A New Testament, the great 2014 solo album from former Girls frontman Christopher Owens. As someone who famously grew up in the Children Of God cult, spirituality has always been a looming subject in Owens’ music, sometimes as explicit context, sometimes as an ambient presence. Even when he was embracing humanism and aligning himself with the New Atheists, religion lingered in his songs as an adversary, the foil in his secular gospel-rock.

Jake E. Lee, the guitarist known for his work with Ozzy Osbourne in the 1980s, is in intensive care after being shot multiple times during a Las Vegas street shooting early this morning. Local authorities say the shooting was “completely random,” and Lee’s reps say he’s expected to fully recover.

On Monday night, Donald Trump was giving a town-hall address in the Philadelphia suburbs, and its question-and-answer portion was interrupted by a couple of medical emergencies. Trump reacted by demanding that music be played in the venue — first Pavarotti’s version of “Ave Maria” and then, when the onlookers turned out to be OK, the Village People’s “YMCA.” “Let’s not do any more questions,”Trunp said. “Let’s just listen to music. Let’s make it into a music fest.” According to the Associated Press, Trump’s team went on to play Guns N’ Roses’ “November Rain,” Sinéad O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” and Rufus Wainwright’s version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

We last heard from the heavy North Carolina shoegazers Clearbody when they released their 2023 EP Bend Into A Blur. Today, they’ve followed it with a new standalone single. Their song “In Another Life” is an urgent churn with some big hooks. I can’t read that title without my brain singing it in Katy Perry voice, but that’s not how Clearbody do it. Listen below.

Crowning, the Chicago trio whose membership includes Frail Body leader Lowell Shaffer, are a serious force in the mutually supportive screamo underground, and they’re always down to release a split with another band. Crowning have a bunch of splits to their name. The way they do the splits, bitch, their pants might rip. Two years after they dropped a serious one with Baltimore’s Eyelet, and now they’ve got a huge new one with a band from Japan.

Richmond metal-punks Private Hell have lately been talking about their plan to knock out a series of self-released flexis. The first of those EPs is called Wake Up Screaming, and it came out last Friday. The band already shared the towering opening track “Dead Inside,” and now you get to hear the other two joints, one of which is a Joy Division cover.

The New Jersey singer/rapper 070 Shake released her album You Can’t Kill Me, and she followed it with the solo single “Black Dress” and the Ken Carson collab “Natural Habitat.” Now, Shake has another album called Petrichor coming next month, and her newest single sounds very little like anything that she’s done before.

This Friday, Porridge Radio will share Clouds In The Sky They Will Always Be There For Me, the follow-up to 2022’s magnificent Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder To The Sky. This new album is shaping up to be just as gorgeous and powerful, as per previous singles “Sick Of The Blues” and “A Hole In The Ground.” Today, the British indie rock band is back with the shattering “God Of Everything Else.”

Back in April, beloved Boston shoegazers Drop Nineteens played their first show in a whopping 30 years. This weekend, they’ll kick off a handful of tour dates for the fall, including an appearance at Austin’s stacked Levitation Festival in November, coinciding with the release of their first new album in three decades. They’re really making the most out of this reunion! Today, Drop Nineteens announced that they’ll be properly issuing their long lost album from 1991, aptly titled 1991. The lead single “Daymom” is out now.

Back in July, Fire Talk announced their signing of UK duo Lots Of Hands with the single “Rosie.” That song is going to be on Lots Of Hands’ upcoming album into a pretty room, and before it’s out in January, they’ve shared another new single today called “Game Of Zeroes.”

Next month, Father John Misty will release his new album Mahashmashana, which is hotly anticipated even though we’ve already heard more than half of its tracks. Some of those songs were released through unconventional means. “She Cleans Up,” which sounds a bit like the Velvet Underground doing boogie-rock, was already up on SoundCloud. But now the Mist has given the song a proper release, thus allowing you to put it on all your little playlists or whatever.

Last month, Greg Mendez announced his new EP First Time / Alone along with his signing to Dead Oceans. The evocative singer-songwriter released “First Time,” and now he’s sharing “Alone.”

A couple of months ago, Panda Bear released the Reset Mariachi EP with Sonic Boom. Today, the project of Animal Collective’s Noah Lennox is announcing a new album called Sinister Grift. The lead single “Defense” is out now, and it features Cindy Lee on guitar.

Southeast Asia has a hardcore scene that’s currently thriving, and its flagship band might be Bangkok’s Whispers. Whispers have long been known for their ability to make big crowds of kids go nuts, and they’ve started doing that internationally more and more often. Expect more of that to happen, since Whispers just announced a new EP on the big US hardcore label Flatspot Records that’ll feature a bunch of heavy hitters from across the hardcore world.

Alex Van Halen’s memoir Brothers is out next week. To promote it, the Van Halen drummer sat down with Rolling Stone for his first interview since the death of his brother and bandmate, guitar god Eddie Van Halen.

Last month, the Slaps announced their new album Mudglimmer and released the title track as well as “Compromised Dirt” featuring Merce Lemon and Lunar Vacation’s Maggie Geeslin. Today, the free jazz/post-rock crew is back with the adventurous “Fool.”

Flint, Michigan’s Greet Death have proven themselves to be masters of dark, tangled, psychologically fucked indie rock; they’re like an American Arab Strap. Greet Death dropped the great EP New Low in 2022, and they recently turned up on Infant Island’s “Kindling.” Now, there’s a new Greet Death song that seems to be a stand-alone single, at least for now.

The Stereogum staff spent last weekend in Las Vegas at the inaugural Best Friends Forever festival, taking in performances from a range of gritty and emotive ’90s underground rock heroes and their spiritual descendants. Speakers Corner Quartet have announced an original score for the BBC 1 show Mr Loverman, out Nov. 8. Today, the group shared the lead single, a cover of Arthur Russell’s “This Is How We Walk On The Moon” featuring Tirzah.

A musical film centered on a Neil Diamond tribute band is on its way. The Craig Brewer-directed Song Sung Blue, titled after the singer-songwriter’s 1972 #1 hit, started production today (Oct. 18), and stars Hugh Jackson and Kate Hudson.

It was surprising enough when Rick Astley teamed up with Manchester indie rockers Blossoms for a run of Smiths cover shows a few years ago. Now, as the leaves of Brat summer begin to turn gold, they’ve really outdone themselves by putting their own creative spin on Charli XCX’s “360” for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge covers series.

Over the past year, numerous people have accused rap mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexual, physical, and verbal abuse. Last month, federal authorities indicted him for charges including sex trafficking and racketeering; he was denied bail after pleading not guilty. Last month, a former Bad Boy Records employee sued Diddy for rape, and a few days later, an anonymous 12th accuser filed a separate lawsuit alleging he drugged and sexually assaulted her. Today, six new accusers have filed lawsuits against Diddy, alleging rape, sexual abuse, and sexual assault, including one instance during which the accuser was 16 years old.

Olivia Rodrigo’s excellent sophomore album GUTS came out just a little over a year ago, and she’s still on tour in support of it. She’s been all over the globe this go around, and she crossed Australia off her tour bucket list over the weekend. It was an eventful trip Down Under: She somehow fell through a hole the stage during a Melbourne show (and took it like a fucking champ!) and met a fellow beloved international celebrity, Pesto the penguin. Kaseem Ryan, the beloved Brooklyn underground rapper, producer, and firefighter known as Ka, has died. His family posted a message to his Instagram account today revealing that he passed away unexpectedly in New York on Saturday. No cause of death has been revealed. Ka was 52.

A fun game to play at Best Friends Forever: Name bands that could potentially play next year’s festival, if the fest gets a chance to come back. Judging by T-shirts alone, Jawbreaker should be absolute locks for the headliner spot. Beyond that, the game turns into a delirious exercise of remembering some guys: Pretty Girls Make Graves! Rocket From The Crypt! Slint! Sebadoh! Texas Is The Reason! Slant 6! Touché Amoré! Scowl! An Elliott Smith hologram! Bring them all!

Being a K-pop star means always having to say you’re sorry. Imagine the South Korean pop machine as a technologically advanced, extremely online version of the old Hollywood studio system. Idols are expected to maintain a certain standard of behavior, and their transgressions are constantly surveilled and documented. That means that everytime one of the genre’s biggest stars fucks up, or even when they engage in behavior that can be nebulously viewed as a fuckup, they must publicly beg for atonement. We’ve seen some prominent examples in recent months, and now we’ve got another one.

You didn’t think the Brat rollout was over, did you? Charli XCX has been dominating the headlines all year, and she’s going to keep this thing going for as long as she possibly can. Just last week, Charli released her massive all-star remix album Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat. And she still has more all-star remixes left to go! Today, Charli has gotten together with fellow party-girl god Kesha on a new version of “Spring breakers,” one of the bonus tracks that Charli originally released on the deluxe edition Brat and it’s the same but there’s three more songs so it’s not.

It’s been more than three years since Ethel Cain released her stirring, momentous debut album Preacher’s Daughter. Since then, she’s become a force-of-nature live act and a cult star. Now, Ethel Cain is finally ready to announce her follow-up LP, though we don’t have much information beyond its title. On Instagram this morning, Cain broke the news: Her next album is called Perverts, and it’s coming early next year. “Punish,” its first single, will arrive in a few weeks.
